Kenneth and  Dorothy Palmer have been carving since 1995, when they became members of the Kickapoo Karvers in Danville, Illinois. Since then, Kenneth has won Grand Championships in carving and sculpturing. He also teaches carving, and gives seminars in the Western Indiana and East-central Illinois areas.

On this page are examples of their work and are available for purchase. Visitors to their studio are welcome, best to call ahead.

Examples of Sea life Carvings

These three Manatee, or sea cows, were carved out of butternut wood and finished with a clear finish, primarily waxed.

These are very large items and are for outdoors or larger indoor spaces.

The Mariner is carved in butternut wood, and finished with
clear spray and then waxed to rain-protect it.

The  Spirit Face is carved in sassafras wood.

Although done sometime ago,
they are in very good shape.

Many smaller carvings are also available, including statues and wildlife table pieces
This dolphin is about 5 foot tall and is finished clear and waxed to bring out the wood highlights.

This piece was done in the late spring of 2004. Outdoor or indoor..

Price is $600.00

The Timber Wolf, is done in basswood, which is a soft wood and has little grain so therefore we  paint this wood most of the time.  Finished with a clear spray finish in semi-gloss.  This is a beautiful piece! The scenery around it is done all in one piece with the wolf The Grizzly Bear, is carved in butternut wood, which has a beautiful grain. We do not paint this type of grain unless it is a piece of wood with some flaws in it, or very little grain.

This piece is finished with Clear Spray and is in Satin
Serenity, the rose in hand, the rose is made of Cedar Wood, the leaves are of Basswood, and the hand is Basswood.  The base is Butternut. On the backside of the hand it is detailed as a normal human hand.
A beautiful piece, for $275.00
Nativity Scene, this humbling sculpture has 14 figures in it and all are Basswood, finely detailed and finished with clear sealer and waxed. The stable is from Cherry Wood, the base from Burl Walnut Wood, and the back from Walnut Wood as well.  All finished with clear sealer, then waxed also. On the top of the Stable a steel wire extends out with a Chip-carved Star on it. 
This amazing piece is priced at $1800.00, and has more than 600 hours in the making.

Lessons & Seminars
Lessons to learn woodcarving are $7.00 an hour, you can take as many lessons as you want to take, that is up to you.  He will advise you of how he feels you are doing.  Also, he does give day or evening lessons, whichever is preferred.
 
Seminars consist of having at least 7 people and we have room for more if need be.  He will be advertising to have a Seminar shortly.  Also, the piece or pieces you will be carving  will be announced at that time.  As always keep chipping away, if you are already a carver.
